Syntactic configuration of metaphors. Reflections on the aesthetic Middle High German vocabulary

The research project examines the syntactic configuration of metaphors in Middle High German and is located at the interface of German linguistics and medieval studies. Metaphor research in both disciplines is characterized by numerous theoretical approaches, which however do not seem to focus on syntactic and structural aspects. This is where the research project sets in and asks specifically about systematic connections between metaphorical interpretation and syntactic structure: Do metaphors rely on specific syntactic structures? Is there an affinity or a restriction? And where are the indicators of the semantic conflict often inherent in metaphors to be located? In addition, the research project aims to demonstrate the added value of linguistic analyses and considerations for literary research and, as a result, to advocate for an integrative approach.
