The ‘Different’ Aesthetics of Ancient Economic Spaces in Rome During the Late Republic and Early Imperial Period

The project is dedicated to the economic spaces of Rome in the late Republic and early Imperial period. Due to factors such as a large population, wealth and availability of goods in a dense urban space, Rome was most likely a driving force in the development of new types of economic architecture and their specific aesthetic design. In this context, the project understands not only the buildings themselves and their elements, materials, and presentation in the urban space as figures of aesthetic reflection, but also literary texts, inscriptions, and coins. While the archaeological evidence for buildings from the late Republic is comparatively poor, the evidence from the Augustan period is more substantial. On the basis of these examples, questions about the ornamental forms that were developed and preferences concerning materials, etc. can be examined. For Rome, the unique availability of literary sources makes it possible to investigate the background of the development, construction and reception of the buildings, such as economic and political intentions or the constitution of social orders.
