Uni-Tübingen

Legal requirements

Statutory provisions regulate how inventions are handled and how technology is transferred at the University. Research is paid for with public money; it is therefore carried out on behalf of the government and for the good of society. As a result, inventions and the resulting intellectual property rights belong to the University and therefore to the State of Baden-Württemberg.

University employees are legally obliged to register new inventions. This applies to universities and research institutions, as explicitly stipulated by law.

The law regulating employees’ inventions (ArbEG) and its remuneration guidelines stipulate that inventors receive a share of the proceeds: inventors receive 30% of gross revenue, while the remaining net revenue is divided between the institute and the University.
