This course tackles key challenges faced by international job seekers and provides practical guidance on crucial aspects of the German job market. You will learn where to find open positions, how to build a strong professional network, and how to leverage tools like myIDP, LinkedIn, and informational interviews to make informed career decisions. Special emphasis is placed on the differences between academia and industry, helping you assess which path suits you best.
To help you stand out, the course covers what makes a CV truly effective, how to write a compelling Cover Letter, and how to position yourself as the best candidate. You’ll also gain valuable insights into common job interview pitfalls, handling difficult questions, and salary negotiations—ensuring that you approach every step of the process with confidence. As a bonus, the course includes a dedicated section on how ChatGPT can support your job search, helping you craft better applications and prepare for interviews efficiently.

Dr. Matthias Mayer is an experienced professional development trainer with over 20 years of experience in supporting young scientists on their career paths. In 2021, he founded the Young Scientists Academy (ysa), where he and his team offer seminars and coaching in areas such as time management, presentation, leadership, and communication. His mission is to help scientists advance not only professionally but also personally.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mayer has collaborated with numerous renowned institutions, including several Max Planck Institutes, EMBL Heidelberg, DESY Hamburg, FU Berlin, HZB Berlin, and several graduate academies. In addition to his extensive experience as a trainer, he has an interdisciplinary academic background, holding a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg and a diploma in Visual Communication from HFBK Hamburg. This unique combination of analytical expertise and creative perspective informs his practical approach to helping scientists strategically develop their careers.
