Requirements and application
This degree program is free of admission, i.e. you will receive a study place if you meet the admission requirements. An application is nevertheless required to check these prerequisites. The study program can be started in both the winter and summer semesters.
A prerequisite for admission to the Mathematics M.Ed. program in vocational schools is successful completion of the Mathematics B.Ed. program in vocational schools.
The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be held in English. A good knowledge of English is expected for the study of literature. Therefore, knowledge of English is required. However, formal proof of English proficiency is not required. German language skills to the extent of DSH-2 (Testdaf4) are required for foreign students.
International applicants *without* a German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language proficiency in accordance with the university´s matriculation regulations (see also information on proof of linguistic study ability / DSH language test).
The program can only be studied as a general education second subject together with social pedagogy/educational science and is free of admission in this combination. More information on the website of the Institute of Education.
Program details
Building on the fundamental issues in linear algebra, analysis, geometry and stochastics from the Bachelor of Education in the higher teaching profession at vocational schools with a general education second subject of mathematics, you will expand your material and methodological competencies in the area of subject didactics as well as in two of the areas of analysis, algebra and numerics. You will deepen your mathematical and mathematics-didactic knowledge and competencies, which will enable you to design targeted teaching, learning and educational processes in the subject of mathematics and to independently introduce new subject-specific and interdisciplinary developments into teaching and school development.
The program has been newly established for the winter semester 2019/2020. Initially, only enrollments for the first semester are possible.
Depending on whether you enter in the winter or summer semester, the 1st or 2nd semester is largely filled by the school practice component, which is accompanied by a subject didactics course at the university. In the remaining semesters you choose 2 of the 3 modules "Introduction to Function Theory and Ordinary Differential Equations", "Algebra" and "Numerics". This will deepen your knowledge in two central areas of calculus or in algebra with applications to classical questions in geometry or in another applied area of mathematics. In addition, you have the opportunity to set your own focus by attending a selected seminar. The program is completed with the master's thesis (15 credit points) in one of the two chosen subject areas (including their didactics) or in educational sciences.
Information can be found on the website of the M.Ed. Mathematics for the vocational teaching profession.
The Department of Mathematics runs a large number of student exchange programs with partner universities in various European countries. Further information can be found under Study Abroad.
Optional time abroad
You may choose to spend some time abroad as part of any study program. You should start planning it 12 to 18 months before your departure.
Here you will find general information and advice on studying abroad. In addition, some departments have their own subject-specific services providing information on studying abroad.
In the winter semester 2023/24, approximately 800 students will be studying at the Department of Mathematics:
Mathematik B.Sc.: | 182 |
Mathematik M.Sc.: | 43 |
Mathematical Physics M.Sc.: | 37 |

The Module Handbook of the M.Ed. program in higher vocational education describes the objectives and structure of a degree program. You will find more detailed information on the type and scope of all modules as well as their courses, requirements and examinations in the module handbook. An ideal course plan in the module handbook helps you to plan your studies. The module handbook and the examination regulations help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.
