PhD student (m/f/d, TV-L E13, 65 %)

Faculty of Humanities, Institute for Prehistory, Early History and Medieval Archaeology

The Institute of Prehistory, Early History and Medieval Archaeology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen is seeking to fill the position of a

research assistant for doctoral studies
(m/f/d, TV-L E13, 65%, limited to three years)

as of 1 October 2024.

The position is part of a co-operation project funded by the German Research Foundation with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in the Stuttgart Regional Council on the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the area west of Tübingen. Prerequisites for employment are an above-average degree (Master's) in Prehistoric Archaeology, very good knowledge of the later Stone Age in Central Europe and experience in the scientific analysis of stone artefacts.

The doctoral candidate will be involved in empirical studies of the known Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic stone artefact inventories from excavations in the Ammer and central Neckar valleys. At the centre of interest are comparative studies on raw material supply and mobility, function and handling of formal tools and the technology of basic mould production. The question of continuity and discontinuity in the behaviour of Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic people in the working area will be investigated by looking at various aspects of stone artefact production.

The following aspects are of particular importance:

  • Evaluation of extensive Mesolithic and Neolithic stone artefact inventories
  • Technological analyses (including work step analysis, transformation analysis, functional investigations)
  • Heat treatment of raw stone materials (tempering)
  • Morphometric analyses using 3D models

We expect openness to empirical work methods, new research methods and statistical analyses, a high level of willingness for interdisciplinary networking and cooperation as well as the ability to work independently and a high level of personal commitment.

Severely disabled persons with equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration. The University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity.

The University of Tübingen aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore invites applications from suitably qualified female academics.
