First measures for SD at the University of Tübingen

Predominantly through student initiatives, the first concepts for SD at the university were developed and preparations for the EMAS certification were made.

Studium Oecologium

The Studium Oecologicum is a programme of courses on sustainable development for students of all disciplines.

2010
Establishment of the Advisory Council for Sustainable Development

The Advisory Board for Sustainable Development "shall formulate recommendations to the Rectorate for a comprehensive sustainability strategy for the University of Tübingen and thus contribute to the development of a strategy for sustainable development in teaching, research and administration and to initiate its implementation".

First Sustainability Lecture

Since then, the Sustainability Lecture takes place every year in November and is dedicated to current topics of sustainability, represented by well-known speakers.

First call for submissions for the Sustainability Award for Theses

The Sustainability Award recognises outstanding Bachelor's and Master's theses on the topic of sustainable development. The prize is awarded annually by the University of Tübingen.

EMAS Certification

The university has been EMAS-certified since 2011, and a revalidation took place in 2014.

Establishment of PF 3

The Platform for Environmental Systems ("Environmental Platform") connects the research groups working on environmental issues at the University of Tübingen as part of the university's excellence strategy.

Establishment of the KNE

From the beginning, the main objective of the competence centre has been to address SD in a whole-institution approach.

Establishment of the Innovation Fund

In the years 2013 to May 2017, the fund supported a total of 47 projects and measures that addressed issues of sustainable development in teaching, research and operations at the University of Tübingen.

First award of the World Action Programme

The university as a place of learning with an award for the World Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development 2016.

Tübingen as a Hoch-N partner university

HOCH-N is a BMBF project carried out jointly by a network of 11 universities. It takes place in the context of the World Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development and in relation to the national action plan of the federal government. Since 2016, the University of Tübingen has also been part of the network.

Award for the Project N

The KNE receives the Sustainability Project 2017 Award for the first time for outstanding commitment and creative and forward-looking ideas for sustainable development.

2019
Second Award of the World Action Program

The university as a place of learning with an award for the World Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development 2019/2020.

2022
Joint project Culture of Sustainability at Universities

As part of the BMBF's funding guideline "Transformation Paths for Sustainable Universities", the joint project KuNaH (Universities in Society - Real-world Experiments of Transformative Learning and Research for a Culture of Sustainability) was launched in October 2022. It deals with the question of what a culture of sustainability at universities might look like and how it can be promoted.
