Language cafés in detail

The International Language Café at the University Library

This café is an open forum for students of different language levels and cultural backgrounds to meet.

Several language groups run simultaneously, allowing participants to switch flexibly between different language tables, try out new languages and strike up conversations with one another.

The language cafés are facilitated by students whose native languages are English, Japanese, Spanish and German. For German, the groups are divided by level.

The focus is on language practice and intercultural encounters. A relaxed café atmosphere encourages conversation.

Language Cafés at the Foreign Language Centre

These language cafés focus on individual languages, offering targeted language practice in small groups.

Each group is led by native-speaking students, providing direct access to the language and culture. The language cafés reflect the diversity of the respective language regions: alongside standard language variants, different regional and cultural perspectives are also highlighted, extending beyond individual national contexts. This provides insights into the breadth of the respective language communities.

The focus is on free conversation, cultural exchange and the active use of the language in a smaller, focused setting.

Who can take part?

The language cafés are open to all students of the University of Tübingen, regardless of their field of study or language proficiency. Both international and German-speaking students are warmly invited.

Do I need to register?

No, you don’t need to register to take part. You can simply drop by and join in.

Do I need to have a certain level of language proficiency?

All language levels are welcome at the Foreign Language Centre’s language cafés. The international language café is open to all levels for English, Japanese and Spanish. For German as a foreign language, it depends on the specific level (as stated above).

What can I expect when I get there?

You can expect an open and relaxed atmosphere with opportunities to meet people from around the world, engage in free-flowing conversation, and actively practise languages whilst experiencing different cultural backgrounds first-hand. Coffee and pastries are also available at the international language café.

How does a language café work?

Once you arrive, you can join a language group and get straight into the conversation. The conversations are facilitated by native-speaking students, but are deliberately kept open and informal.

Can I switch between languages?

At the international language café, you can move freely between the different language tables. At the FSZ language cafés, the focus is on a single language at a time, but there is no limit to how many language cafés you can visit. Please feel free to drop by as many cafés as you like.

Are there any participation fees?

No, attendance at all language cafés is free of charge.
