Workshop: Soil Degradation and Shifting Agrarian Orders in Central Asia

5. Februar bis 6. Februar 2018
Keplerstraße 2, Tübingen | Raum 0.81

The Collaborative Research Centre 923 “Threatened Order – Societies under Stress” at the University of
Tübingen is hosting an international workshop on the ramifications of soil degradation for the agrarian orders
in Central Asia. How do established knowledge, forms and practices of agriculture are challenged by soil
degradation in Central Asia and what do present day trajectories imply for the future of environment in this
critical region?
The CRC project ‘Salinization and soil degradation as threats to the agrarian orders in Russia, Kazakhstan/
Tajikistan and Australia since 1945’ invites an interdisciplinary debate with case-studies across Central Asia to
examine the following questions: How do different actors, i.e. farmers, intellectuals, elites and states, respond
to and frame the threat of soil degradation across various agricultural settings? What are the wider
implications of this threat for the future of the environment, local populations and rural livelihoods in Central
Asia?
