Acting Personifications as a Figure of Aesthetic Reflection in Medieval German Literature

Frau Wildekeit, who takes the narrator in Konrad’s Klage der Kunst by the hand, is a well-known personification in medieval German literature. Besides her, many other personified abstractions and entities can be found, indicating the popularity of the phenomenon ‚personification‘ in medieval literature between 1200-1400. The personification is understood to be an independent agent that helps to discuss explorative questions of representation and representability. The figure of speech is characterized by its ability to be described by various verbs and adjectives that generate uniqueness and a special dynamic. Using personifications means to reflect accurately on the possibilities of representability and representation in the process of production.
