Bath and Spa Music of the Early Modern Period (1450–1750)
The research project is dedicated to balneo-musical spaces of communication and interaction in the early modern period and investigates performative and reflexive aspects of music in the bathing context. First, the social practice of bath and spa music (heterological dimension) is taken as a starting point and its usage which is situated between applied dietetics, artistic practice, social communication and theory is reflected. The next step will be to consider the inner musical logic (autological dimension) and thus present forms, genres and institutional types of bath and spa music within the dynamic interplay of curare and delectare, narratio and moralisatio. The aim is to gain an interdisciplinary understanding of bath and spa music in its functional execution as well as in its aesthetic potential by including textual sources and music.
