Talk by Prof. Dr. Verena Lobsien, HU Berlin

On February 23, 2017, Prof. Dr. Verena Lobsien (HU Berlin) visited the RTG 1808. In line with one of her research interests (Early modern English literature and culture) she developed in her talk „Ambiguous Appleton“ a range of arguments supporting her thesis on „Andersrede“ in Andrew Marvell’s country house poem „Upon Appleton House,” which was published in 1681. One of the most impressive texts behind the poem is the bible, upon which the poem’s narrative is founded. The allusions and metaphoric expressions referring to biblical episodes were of special interest to Verena Lobsien which, eventually, led to a lively discussion about the relationship between metaphor and ambiguity.
