Mathematics - Supplementary subject preparatory work

This degree program is free of admission as long as you meet the admission requirements, i.e. no application is necessary. You can enroll directly for this degree program. You can start your studies in both the winter and summer semesters.

The study of an extension subject - in addition to the two-subject study of the bachelor's degree program in teaching at the Gymnasium with the academic final examination Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) - is designed as a supplementary master's degree program. Therefore, this study program can only be taken up after successful completion of the B.Ed. degree. However, students may, on a voluntary, non-binding basis, complete coursework (Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach) in a third subject in addition to the two main subjects as part of the B.Ed. program, which will later be fully credited in the Master's program Erweiterungsfach. However, taking prerequisite courses does not guarantee admission to the master's program at a later date.

The following general conditions apply to the registration for the preliminary work in the extension subject:

• is enrolled in the B.Ed. program at the University of Tübingen;
• is at least in the 3rd semester in one of the two main subjects;
• can enroll in exactly one additional subject for preliminary credits extension subject (only one subject in the preliminary credits at a time, subject changes are possible);
• can register only in the established subjects, i.e. in those major subjects of the B.Ed. that want to offer an EF or the Vorleistungen EF;
• can only register in subjects in which places are available:
  • subjects with no admission restrictions,
  • subjects with restricted admission in which places are available (allocation of remaining places; first come, first served - see below);
• is subject to the same subject requirements as students who study the chosen subject as a major (incl. study requirements, e.g. Latinum);
• has not lost the right to take examinations in the corresponding major subject.

Within this framework, students can thus study the regular modules of a third B.Ed. major, with the exception of the Bachelor's thesis.

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be held in English. A good knowledge of English is expected for the study of literature. Therefore, knowledge of English is required. However, formal proof of English proficiency is not required. German language skills to the extent of DSH-2 (Testdaf4) are required for foreign students.

International applicants *without* a German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language proficiency in accordance with the university´s matriculation regulations (see also information on proof of linguistic study ability / DSH language test).

In the 1st year of study, you will acquire the fundamentals of mathematics in the areas of analysis and linear algebra, which are fundamental for all other areas of mathematics. Building on this, you will deepen your mathematical knowledge in the classical areas of algebra, analysis and geometry and gain initial insights into the more application-oriented areas of stochastics and numerics. Parallel to the advanced subject lectures, you will take associated subject didactics courses and deal with conceptual questions of teaching mathematics.

The program Bachelor of Education Mathematics Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach is designed in such a way that within the first two semesters a change to or from the program Bachelor of Science Mathematics can be completed without any problems and that also in later semesters the achievements in the subject can be recognized without loss.

The study program is taken up parallel to the study of the two main subjects. This requires individual counseling of each student regarding the structure and composition of his or her studies. The program is dominated by the major compulsory module Fundamentals of Mathematics and the module Advanced Fundamentals of Mathematics, in which the technical foundations of calculus and linear algebra are taught from an academic point of view.

Optional time abroad
You may choose to spend some time abroad as part of any study program. You should start planning it 12 to 18 months before your departure.

Enrollment in the „Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach“ ends when enrollment in the Bachelor of Education no longer exists, i.e. when:

• the Bachelor of Education has been successfully completed,
• the Bachelor of Education has been definitively failed (examination entitlement in the overall course of study lost) or
• you exmatriculate from the Bachelor of Education for other reasons.

It is irrelevant which and how many achievements have been made in the extension subject up to that point. No separate degree is acquired; there is only the possibility of acquiring study and examination credits in the corresponding subject.

The Module Handbook Mathematics Erweiterungsfach describes the objectives and structure of a study program. You will find more detailed information on the type and scope of all modules as well as their courses, requirements and examinations in the module handbook. An ideal course plan in the module handbook helps you to plan your studies. The module handbook and the examination regulations help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.

The Study and Examination Regulations B.Ed. Mathematics Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach contain legally binding regulations for a study program. Among other things, they specify which modules of a study program must be completed and which examinations must be taken in order to successfully complete the study program. The study and examination regulations also regulate how often examinations can be repeated, which deadlines apply to the examinations of a study program and how the final grade is calculated. The examination regulations and the module handbook will help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.

The Bachelor of Education degree alone does not qualify you for a career in public education. However, you can use this academic degree to apply for jobs on the open labor market or to continue your studies in a master's program.

As a rule, the bachelor's degree program is followed by the Master of Education Mathematics Erweiterungsfach. The admission requirements can be found on the corresponding website.

Admission to doctoral studies with a bachelor's degree is not possible. Admission to doctoral studies requires completion of a master's degree program.
