The University of Tübingen was placed at 78 in this year’s Times Higher Education World University Ranking, moving up from 113th place in 2014. In Germany, Tübingen rose one place to no. 6, behind LMU Munich, the University of Heidelberg, the Humboldt University in Berlin, der TU Munich and the Free University of Berlin.
Tübingen also improved in a number of key categories. In the Research category, Tübingen was accorded 59.8 points (previously 44.7); it garnered 47 points in the Teaching category, (up from 41.5). For Citations, Tübingen was given 79.3 points (prev.: 74), 59.2 points for Industry Income (prev.: 54.7) and 58.2 points for International Outlook (prev.: 53).
The University’s improved result was partly due to increased third-party funding of approximately 56 percent over the past five years (excluding Medicine). It also reflects the wise investment of Excellence Initiative funding the University has received.
The Times Higher Education World University Ranking is one of the big three in the field of assessing universities’ quality. The others are QS and the Shanghai Ranking. The THE Ranking uses 13 separate performance indicators to examine a university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
