Artificial Intelligence as a Key Competency

The annual conference of the Baden-Württemberg Forum Schlüsselqualifikationen (SQ) continues to resonate. At the end of March 2026, we met with colleagues from all key competency centers at universities in Baden-Württemberg to exchange ideas. The focus: “Artificial Intelligence as a Key Competency.”

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of the daily lives of many students. So are universities perhaps not the place where AI competencies need to be taught? Or perhaps they are, but with a changed or expanded role for the university? Artificial Intelligence raises important questions that must be understood and discussed, above all, in a societal context. Universities should have a much greater impact on society. We, as the Department of Transdisciplinary Course Program and Career Service (TRACS), strive to make our contribution. Through the Transdisciplinary Course Program, we offer bachelor’s and master’s students from all faculties a space where they can learn, think critically, and develop their own perspectives—including on the topic of AI. In this way, they can actively enrich the democratic discourse on artificial intelligence both within and outside the university.
