Outgoing Applications

There are many aspects to consider when applying. The application process consists of four main steps:

  1. In the fall of the year before the exchange | Application at your home university: Apply to study abroad in Oregon through your Akademisches Auslandsamt Office / International Outgoings Office at your home university. Please note the application deadlines of your home university. You should apply about one year to one and a half years before departure.
  2. October - December | Nominations: Your home university nominates you for the Oregon State Program, after which you will be nominated for the individual partner universities in Oregon. The selection and nomination process for the Oregon State Program takes place in the fall/winter before the academic year of study abroad.
  3. December - February | Application process Oregon Study Center & IE3 Global: After you have accepted your place at Oregon, the Oregon Study Center, in cooperation with our partner organization IE3 Global in Oregon, will inform you about the next steps in the application process. This includes submitting additional documents listed below and an online application form from IE3 Global. We offer an information seminar to help you with this step.
  4. April - June | Pre-Departure Orientation with Oregon Study Center: After you have submitted your documents to the Oregon Study Center and submitted your online application, we will open registration for our “BW->OR Pre-Departure” seminar in the spring, which will prepare you for your stay abroad in Oregon and bring you together with other and former exchange students. At this point, you will also be contacted by your host university in Oregon regarding the J-1 visa, course registration, and housing registration.

For more information about the exchange, please see the Testimonials or FAQ section (available only in German). You are also welcome to contact the Oregon Study Center at any time.

We look forward to helping you find your way to Oregon!

Timeline

Unlike in Germany, the academic year in Oregon is divided into three terms: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each term lasts approximately three months. The academic year begins in September and ends in mid-June. Students can apply to study in Oregon for one, two, or three terms.

Finances

Tuition fees at universities in Oregon – and thus the most cost-intensive part of the exchange – are covered by the exchange program. Tuition fees or the Semestergebühren at the home university in Germany must still be paid. Otherwise, fees are charged by the partner university, for example for the use of campus buildings, and of course there are costs for insurance and flights, as well as general living expenses (clothing, travel, food).

Academics

In Oregon, university courses are usually listed in a “Schedule of Classes” or a “Course Catalog.” Students must take a combination of courses totaling 12 academic credits for undergraduates and 9 for graduates each semester they are in Oregon in order to be considered full-time students, with approximately 3-4 credits per course.

Orientation

A few months before departure, the Oregon Study Center offers an orientation seminar where any questions about the exchange program can be answered and students can prepare for their stay abroad. Orientation seminars are also offered at the respective universities in Oregon.
