NumisVlogs – Interactive Coin Videos in the 21th Century

NumisVlogs is one of 19 projects initiated by young researchers that are funded by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz and the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung as part of the competition "Kleine Fächer: Sichtbar innovativ!". Under the direction of Michele Lange, a doctoral student in numismatics and a research assistant in the SFB 1391 Different Aesthetics, and Jan Papenberg, in close cooperation with Kevin Körner from the Digital Humanities Master's profile and Annika Nagat and Nikolai Sanamrad, students of media studies, around 40 interactive information videos have been created, which provide exciting insights into a wide range of numismatic topics in six thematic blocks. The individual contributions themselves come from over 40 numismatists from all over the German-speaking world. Marie Straubel, a student of Classical Archaeology, was also an important cornerstone in the organisation.

The representations show in two ways the approach that the SFB Different Aesthetics is pursuing: They show how closely design features are related to socially relevant functions. At the same time, they transfer this approach from the substantive level to the current presentation of a subject: in the modern medium of the YouTube channel and its specific aesthetics, a subject communicates access to its topics and research approaches.

To coincide with International Women's Day, the first story block on "Portrait and Gender" was published on the project's own YouTube channel "NumisVlogs" on March 8, 2021. The first seven contributions to the project show different facets of this topic on coins from strong empresses, their address and representation, to different role models.

Every Monday in March and April 2021, the other thematic blocks are published on this channel with equally exciting references relevant to everyday life, such as currency uncertainties, inflation and counterfeits.
