LEAD's first PhD graduate

Hanna Gaspard did research on motivation in math

Hanna Gaspard is the first PhD to complete her doctorate in LEAD. In her dissertation, the psychologist examined how value beliefs can be promoted in mathematics with a brief intervention in the classroom.

For this purpose, within the project "Motivation promotion in mathematics education" (MoMa) 82 ninth classes were assigned at random to one of two intervention groups or a control group. In both intervention groups, Hanna Gaspard and her colleagues Held a 90 minute lesson on the usefulness of mathematics in the classroom context. In her dissertation, Hanna Gaspard examined the effects of this intervention on the value beliefs of students. In addition, she also analyzed the different dimensions of value beliefs and the differences between girls and boys. In her defence last Monday, Hanna Gaspard presented the key findings of these studies.
