DFG: Canada-G7-Nordic Joint Call for Proposals on Quantum Technologies

This is a joint initiative between the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the German Research Foundation (DFG), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), United Kingdom Research and Innovation  Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UKRI-EPSRC), U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and NordForsk on behalf of the Innovation Fund Denmark, the Research Council of Finland, the Research Council of Norway and the Swedish Research Council.
This funding opportunity will support multilateral or bilateral collaborative research projects on quantum science and technologies.

Research objective

Quantum science is the study, manipulation and control of systems at the atomic and subatomic levels. Quantum technologies are at the leading edge of science and innovation worldwide. They will support the growth and transformation of key sectors, enable new economic opportunities, revolutionize security and help advance a range of benefits for society.

At the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit, under Canada’s presidency, G7 leaders agreed to the Kananaskis Common Vision for the Future of Quantum Technologies , recognizing quantum technologies’ potential to bring transformative benefits to societies and committing to boosting international cooperation between like-minded partners to unlock the full potential of these technologies.

Research cooperation is a key element of this vision. As such, this funding opportunity aims to leverage the complementary interests and research expertise found across the participating G7 and Nordic countries to support multilateral or bilateral collaborative research projects in quantum science and technologies.

Proposals may address any challenge in quantum science, but their thrust must aim to advance research in any of the following areas of quantum technologies, or a combination thereof:

- quantum algorithms/encryption, including post-quantum cryptography
- quantum communications
- quantum computing
- quantum materials
- quantum sensing
Proposals may also couple any of these quantum technology thrusts to other research topics in the natural sciences and engineering.

Eligibility
The principal investigators on each side must be eligible to apply to their respective funding agency. Projects must include at least one researcher eligible to receive NSERC funds. Except for the duty to collaborate for researchers at non-university institutions, the regular eligibility rules for DFG funding apply.

Eligible expenses
Each funding agency will provide funding to its national researchers, subject to its national rules and budgetary availability. International researchers are only eligible for funding from their respective national funder.
