Requirements and application

This degree program is free of admission, i.e. you will receive a study place if you meet the admission requirements. An application is nevertheless required to check these prerequisites. The study program can be started in both the winter and summer semesters.

The study of an extension subject - in addition to the two-subject study of the bachelor's degree program in teaching at the Gymnasium with the academic final examination Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) - is designed as a supplementary master's degree program. Therefore, this study program can only be taken up after successful completion of the B.Ed. degree. However, students may, on a voluntary, non-binding basis, take course work (Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach) in a third subject in addition to the two main subjects as part of the B.Ed. program, which will later be fully credited in the Master's program Erweiterungsfach. The program consists solely of the study of this subject and does not include any other educational science components.

Further information can be found on the website of the Tübingen School of Education.

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be held in English. A good knowledge of English is expected for the study of literature. Therefore, knowledge of English is required. However, formal proof of English proficiency is not required. German language skills to the extent of DSH-2 (Testdaf4) are required for foreign students.

International applicants *without* a German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language proficiency in accordance with the university´s matriculation regulations (see also information on proof of linguistic study ability / DSH language test).

Program details

The program is a scientific course of study in which the scientific foundations and methodological competence in the subject and in subject didactics are laid in mathematics, which are necessary to be able to teach the subject of mathematics later at the Gymnasium. In the subject didactics part, competences related to the professional field are also taught.

The extension subject Mathematics can only be studied in the major.

The M.Ed. Mathematics extension program is clearly structured and is essentially composed of compulsory modules with limited elective options. In the first year of study, students acquire the fundamentals of mathematics in the areas of analysis and linear algebra, which are fundamental to all other areas of mathematics. Building on this, they deepen their mathematical knowledge in the classical areas of algebra, analysis and geometry and gain initial insights into the more application-oriented areas of stochastics and numerics. Parallel to the advanced subject lectures, the students take associated subject didactics courses and deal with conceptual questions of teaching mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics runs a large number of student exchange programs with partner universities in various European countries. Further information can be found under Study Abroad

Optional time abroad
You may choose to spend some time abroad as part of any study program. You should start planning it 12 to 18 months before your departure.
Here you will find general information and advice on studying abroad. In addition, some departments have their own subject-specific services providing information on studying abroad.

Facts and figures:

In the winter semester 2023/24, approximately 800 students will be studying at the Department of Mathematics:

The Module Handbook Mathematics M.Ed. extension subject describes the goals and structure of a study program. You will find more detailed information on the type and scope of all modules as well as their courses, requirements and examinations in the module handbook. An ideal course plan in the module handbook helps you to plan your studies. The module handbook and the examination regulations help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.

The study and examination regulations of the M.Ed. extension subject contain legally binding regulations for a study program. Among other things, they specify which modules of a degree program must be completed and which examinations must be taken in order to successfully complete the degree program. The study and examination regulations also regulate how often examinations can be repeated, which deadlines apply to the examinations of a study program and how the final grade is calculated. The examination regulations and the module handbook will help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.
