Requirements and application
From winter semester 24/25, enrolment in the first semester will no longer be possible, as the degree programme will be discontinued and replaced by the degree programme "Cellular and Immunological Biosciences" (new deadline for applications: May, 31st).
• Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related subject with a final grade of 2.50 or better.
• English language skills B2 (see next field for details)
• International applicants without a German-language university entrance qualification must prove German language skills B1 (see next field for details)
• The languages of study and examination in the Master's program are English, and, to a smaller extent, German (elective classes).
• English language skills must be proven by TOEFL (79), or IELTS 6.5, or native English speaker, or English-language bachelor's degree (from a country with English as an official language), or Cambridge Certificate FCA, CAE, CPE (level B2). Skills can also be proven by English as a first foreign language consistently up to the Abitur (final mark "gut" or better).
• International applicants without a German-language university entrance qualification must provide evidence of German language skills by DSH1, Telc B1, TestDaF 3333, or Goethe-Zertifikat B1, exclusively.
It is a so-called "mono-master", i.e. the study is done in one scientific subject.
Program details
The master's program in Molecular Cell Biology & Immunology (MCBI) imparts knowledge about the complex processes involved in the regulation of cellular and immunological processes in humans and animals. The focus of this specialization is the in-depth scientific examination of molecular mechanisms that control the functions and behavior of cells and lead to disease when they are defective. Experimental objects of investigation are model organisms such as Drosophila or Caenorhabditis and cell cultures of animal or human single cells. Experimental results are used to derive knowledge or conclusions about e.g. cell functions in the cell structure, cell differentiation or organ development. Immunological processes are considered in particular in relation to disease-related dysfunctions, such as those found in immunodeficiencies or tumor immunology.
Languages of study and examination are German and English.
The Department of Biology achieves excellent results in all Germany-wide university rankings, both in teaching and research. Results can be found here (registration required).
