Tübingen Humanities strong in QS Rankings
History, Modern Languages and Philosophy among world’s top 100; Math and Finance rise into top 200.
The University of Tübingen is among the world’s top 200 institutions in 12 of the 30 subjects featured in the current QS World University Rankings by Subject, released Wednesday. The London-based QS Intelligence Unit, which compiles the ranking, surveyed some 70,000 academics and employers worldwide to identify universities paramount in the various fields and those considered to produce the best graduates in a given discipline. The Unit also analyzed citation frequency along with research productivity and impact.
In the Arts & Humanities, Tübingen’s disciplines of History, Modern Languages, and Philosophy joined Linguistics in the world’s top 100. In the Natural Sciences, Tübingen’s Earth Science holds its place among the top 100.
Tübingen Mathematics and Accounting & Finance make their first appearance in the top 200, joining Physics & Astronomy.
The publishers of the rankings stress that, given the different criteria involved, there is more than one way to interpret which university comes out ahead. They also point out that universities in Asia and Australia have made a strong showing in the sciences and technology, challenging long-established institutions in Europe.
Tübingen is placed in the top 150 in all four categories of the Life Sciences; of those, however, Biology and Medicine have moved down from the top 100, Pharmacology has held its place, and Psychology has risen from the top 200.
Overall, Germany remains very strong in the disciplines of Linguistics, Medicine, Pharmacology Engineering, Physics and Chemistry, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Yet its publishers say the index reveals areas in which both France and Germany are trailing in the wake of intensified global competition, despite progress made under government excellence initiatives: “Germany has no top-50 institutions in important areas such as mathematics and economics, while there are no French institutions in the top 50 in computer science or any of the four areas of engineering.”
The University of Tübingen is no. 134 overall in the QS World University Rankings.
