Tübingen moves up in THE Ranking

Leap of more than 100 places to no. 113 of world’s best

The University of Tübingen has made a great leap forward in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2014-15, released October 1. Tübingen came in at no. 113 among the world’s top universities. This represents a rise of at least 112 places; last year the University was placed in the 201-225 bracket.

Tübingen showed a strong improvement in the categories of Teaching, where it rose to 41.5 points from just over 31 the previous year, Research (44.7 points, up from 21.6), and Industry Income (up to 54.7 from 32.3). The Citations category was stronger than ever at 74 points, up from 71.8.

“The University of Tübingen’s clear improvement in this important international ranking is the result of many years of systematic development of our profile, particularly within the framework of the Excellence Initiative and the University’s Institutional Strategy,” said University president, Professor Bernd Engler. “This result realistically reflects the University’s performance in the fields of research and teaching, in obtaining third-party funding, and of course our increasingly good contacts with industry.” He added that Tübingen’s improvement in the THE ranking would give added impetus to the effort to further improve Tübingen’s image as a place of excellent research and teaching.

Tübingen is now ranked seventh among the German universities; last year it was twelfth. The higher-ranked German universities are: LMU Munich (no. 29 in the world), Göttingen (67), Heidelberg (70), the Humboldt University in Berlin (80), the Free University of Berlin (81) and the Technische Universität München (98).

Along with the QS and Shanghai Rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Ranking is one of the big three internationally-recognized indicators of academic quality. The THE Ranking uses 13 separate performance indicators to examine a university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
