Specific topics and difficulties

On this page you will find important information about the regulatory framework in situations in which, due to adverse conditions (e.g. an impaired ability to study due to health issues), examinations possibly cannot be taken or passed in time within the specified deadline. In addition, we would like to notify you of consultation options and workshop offers concerning exam preparation.

After missing an exam deadline or failing an exam: What to do when the entitlement to take exams is “in danger”?

Students should seek advice early on if it emerges that they might lose their entitlement to take examinations due to failing exams or impending failure to meet the deadline. As a rule, without the entitlement to take examinations it is not possible to continue studies in the same discipline or in a related degree program, not even at another university in Germany.

Concerning this matter, UT’s Student Counseling Service offers extensive information and consultation opportunities with regard to options for action and alternatives. This includes topics like exam preparation, delays in your studies, handling cases of illness, application as a case of hardship and similar. You can find the contact details of the Student Counseling Service here: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/632

For inquiries concerning exams, moreover, the program advisors in the respective departments as well as the examinations offices are available for contact.
You can find the program advisors’ contact data here: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/92

Leave of absence and prolonged illness

Students on leave of absence, e.g. due to illness, are not entitled to take examinations. Exceptions are made in case of a leave due to parental leave or care duties; in these situations, students have the right to take exams during their leave.

You can find information about this topic as well as the application for a leave of absence here: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/848

Students who did not obtain a leave of absence but have fallen ill for a longer time should submit a medical certificate for the duration of the illness (a sick note does not suffice). In case of delays in their studies, they may apply for an extension of the deadline if applicable. The application is made to the relevant exam board via the examinations office responsible: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/120435

For inquiries or issues in connection with illness during your studies, study planning, support options, reentering your studies etc., UT’s Student Counseling Service is available to assist: https://uni-tuebingen.de/de/632

Disadvantage compensation for students with a disability, prolonged illness or care obligations

Students with a disability, chronic or prolonged illness, or with care obligations under certain conditions are entitled to compensation for disadvantages. Disadvantage compensation is granted when students concerned are at a disadvantage if they attend an exam in the designated manner due to their respective individual circumstances. The conditions of disadvantage compensation are laid down in the examination regulations.

Information and consultation options concerning disadvantage compensation can be found on the web pages of the Student Counseling Services at Studying with health impairments: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/169590

Students concerned should seek in-depth advice before applying to be able to make their application as specific and personalized as possible. These are always individual case assessments as health impairments can differ substantially.

Corona semester: Extension of exam deadlines

According to an amendment of the State law on higher education (LHG), for all students who were enrolled in a degree program at a university in Baden-Württemberg during one or more of the four “Corona semesters” (summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/21, summer semester 2021, winter semester 2021/2022), the deadlines for assessments and exams tied to program-specific semesters are extended by one semester for each of those semesters.

However, this extension concerning exams is limited to three semesters maximum per person.

Usually, the extension will be considered automatically. It also applies to repeat exams as well as to maximum periods of studies for graduation.
