Lecture Series “Andere Ästhetik – Kunst und Gesellschaft in der Vormoderne”
In the Winter Semester of 2024/25, the CRC Different Aesthetics invites you to attend the lecture series “Andere Ästhetik – Kunst und Gesellschaft in der Vormoderne” as part of the studium generale (general study programme). Since 2019, the Collaborative Research Centre has investigated the role that aesthetic practices play in various social domains – from religion, to politics, to academia, to everyday culture. The inquiry into the relationship between art and society will primarily be examined from the perspective of pre-modern aesthetic acts, artefacts, and actors – from antiquity through the Middle Ages up to the early modern period. It is here that art and life, art and society form a particularly visible reciprocal relationship that defined art practices for over 2000 years. The goal of the event is to make these approaches known to a wider audience as a ‘different’ aesthetics from 18th and 19th-century approaches and their implications. Moreover, the examination of pre-modern phenomena will open up necessary new perspective on present-day practices and discourse.
