Online-Magazin schulmanagement: How to Successfully Teach Programming in Primary School

Katrin Kunz explains in her guest article for the online magazine schulmanagement how children can be introduced to computer science concepts – and why teachers should pay particular attention to misconceptions in the process.

How can students become proficient in using digital technologies? Recent studies show that more than 40 percent of eighth-grade students in Germany possess only basic digital skills. Introducing computer science in primary school could help address this issue – but how can it be done in a child-friendly and effective way? Katrin Kunz is searching for answers at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology.

Katrin Kunz studied Cognitive Science and secondary school teaching (Mathematics and Computer Science). She works at the Hector Research Institute on the development of computer science courses for the Hector Children’s Academies and is pursuing a PhD on the development of mental models of programming concepts in gifted primary school students.
