How to identify gifted elementary school children

PINGUIN demo video presents innovative assesment tool for elementary school children

How can teachers reliably and efficiently gain insight into the basic competencies of elementary school children and their cognitive potential? The collaborative project “PINGUIN: Potential Identification IN Elementary School” is developing a tablet-based, modular assessment tool for this purpose. It measures skills in language, literacy, and mathematics, as well as general cognitive potential, and provides teachers with individualized feedback already at school entry. At the same time, it helps teachers identify particularly gifted children for the Hector Children’s Academies Program and standardizes the selection process.

In a new demo video, the penguin Flocke guides children through the tasks and playfully demonstrates how the assessment takes place in the classroom. (The video is only available in German.)

"With Flocke, we want to make the testing setting understandable and accessible to children in a playful way. This creates a positive foundation for assessing potential and competencies in the classroom," says Dr. Benjamin Goecke. He is part of the scientific team accompanying the Hector Children’s Academies in the area of potential development and giftedness, and a member of the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network
