Assistant professors

An assistant professorship can serve as an ideal start to a career as a professor. You will try out the independent implementation of research projects and courses within the framework of a chair.

Four central topics for Juniorprofessors

What is the Juniorprofessorship?

The junior professorship enables young researchers to conduct independent research and teaching after their doctorate. Like the permanent professors, they belong to the group of university lecturers. Depending on the scope of the professorship, they supervise doctoral students and postdocs. After a certain period, junior professorships are subject to an interim evaluation. If this is passed, the final evaluation takes place at the end of the usually 6-year term of the junior professorship. If the evaluation is positive, junior professors have the opportunity to apply for a permanent professorship.

Skills & Competences

In order to master the various requirements of teaching, management, leadership, research and third-party funding and to successfully gain a professorship, the Graduate Academy Tübingen offers a comprehensive program for in-depth qualification within the framework of the Researcher Development Program.

In addition, the Graduate Academy offers you intensive, personal and in-depth individual coaching. The goal of the coaching is to accompany you comprehensively on your further academic or non-academic career with strategies and solutions.

Differences to the Tenure-Track Professorship

This is different with the tenure-track professorship, which is similar to the junior professorship in most respects. In the case of a tenure-track professorship, the transition to a permanent professorship at the same university takes place immediately after the successful completion of the final evaluation without any further appointment procedure. The tenure-track professorship thus represents a relatively predictable career path for academics. The University of Tübingen also offers consulting and continuing education programs in this area. Please contact the Department of HR Developmentfor further information.

Researcher Development Program

In addition to these funding formats, the Graduate Academy offers a broad workshop program in the Researcher Development Program in the areas of intercultural skills, career, funding programs and leadership.

Funding Opportunities

There are various information and counseling opportunities for the financial support of young researchers at the university. Are you a doctoral student, postdoc or habilitant and would like to find out about financing options?
