Requirements and application

This degree program is free of admission as long as you meet the admission requirements, i.e. no application is necessary. You can enroll directly for this degree program. You can start your studies in both the winter and summer semesters.

The prerequisite for studying at the University of Tübingen is the general university entrance qualification, usually the Abitur, or another university entrance qualification, e.g. the Delta examination for prospective students with a "Fachhochschulreife" or a "Fachgebundene Hochschulreife" or a university entrance qualification for those with vocational qualifications. Applicants with foreign school-leaving qualifications should contact the Department of Counseling and Admissions for International Students.

Before you start your teaching degree course, you must participate in a teacher orientation test procedure, which you must prove at the time of matriculation. Various things are recognized here (§ 4 paragraph 2 Admission and Matriculation Regulations of the University of Tübingen ZIO): You can either take an online test (http://www.cct-germany.de/de/0/tours/new/1/bw , print out a confirmation for matriculation at the end of the round trip). Or you can get a confirmation of counseling at the Tübingen School of Education TüSE, at the Central Academic Counseling ZSB, the academic counseling in the subjects or at the counseling centers for academic professions of the Employment Agency.

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be held in English. A good knowledge of English is expected for the study of literature. Therefore, knowledge of English is required. However, formal proof of English proficiency is not required. German language skills to the extent of DSH-2 (Testdaf4) are required for foreign students.

International applicants *without* a German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language proficiency in accordance with the university´s matriculation regulations (see also information on proof of linguistic study ability / DSH language test).

In addition to the subject mathematics, a second major subject is taken. For the bachelor's degree, students must earn 72 credit points each in subject-specific science and 9 credit points each in subject-specific didactics, plus a bachelor's thesis with 6 credit points. Another integral part of the program is the educational science program (BWS) with 12 credit points (including the orientation internship). It prepares students for a scientifically sound and professional activity in schools and teaching.

The B.Ed. Mathematics can be combined with any teaching subject offered in Tübingen - except NwT.

Program details

You acquire basic mathematical thinking patterns such as structuring problems, creating chains of reasoning and finally proving mathematical theorems. Graduates know the basic problems in linear algebra, analysis, numerics, stochastics and geometry and master the central techniques for their solutions. They are able to communicate mathematical issues, to use appropriate media and to establish references to school mathematics. They are able to justify the general educational content of mathematical content and convey the social significance of mathematics.

The Bachelor of Education in Mathematics is designed in such a way that within the first two semesters a change to or from the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics can be made without any problems and that also in later semesters the achievements in the subject can be recognized without any loss.

In the first year of study, students acquire the fundamentals of mathematics in the areas of analysis and linear algebra, which are fundamental to all other areas of mathematics. Building on this, they deepen their mathematical knowledge in the classical areas of algebra and geometry and gain initial insights into the more application-oriented areas of stochastics and numerics. Parallel to the more advanced subject lectures, students take associated subject didactics courses and deal with fundamental conceptual issues in the teaching of mathematics.

The module manual describes the objectives and structure of a degree program. You will find more detailed information on the type and scope of all modules as well as their courses, requirements and examinations in the Module Handbook of the B.Ed. Mathematics. An ideal course plan in the module handbook helps you to plan your studies. The module handbook and the examination regulations help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.

The study and examination regulations for the B.Ed. Mathematics contain legally binding regulations for a study program. Among other things, they specify which modules of a study program must be completed and which examinations must be taken in order to successfully complete the study program. The study and examination regulations also regulate how often examinations can be repeated, which deadlines apply to the examinations of a study program and how the final grade is calculated. The examination regulations and the module handbook will help you to understand the framework of your studies and to select the right modules/courses.

After your studies

The Bachelor of Education degree alone does not qualify you for a career in public education. However, you can use this academic degree to apply for jobs on the open labor market or to continue your studies in a master's program.

Admission to doctoral studies with a bachelor's degree is not possible. Admission to doctoral studies requires completion of a master's degree program.
