Fellowship for Syrian archaeologist

Humboldt initiative sponsors Professor Ammar Abdulrahman to research in Tübingen

Syrian archaeologist Professor Ammar Abdulrahman will be continuing to teach and conduct research - now at the University of Tübingen, thanks to a two-year fellowship from the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Humboldt Foundation.

Professor Abdulrahman is an internationally-recognized researcher and was director of Archaeology at the University of Damascus. He had to leave because of the civil war in Syria. Das fellowship enables him to spend time researching at the Institute for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (IANES) in Tübingen. There he will work with Professor Peter Pfälzner on the evolution of Bronze Age settlements in Syria and northern Iraq. Their research project involves mapping ancient sites using the latest geoinformation systems. The project will make an important contribution to the preservation of the historical record. The two men previously worked together on excavations in Syria for a number of years.
The Philipp Schwartz Initiative oversaw the disbursing of 23 fellowships across Germany to international researchers at risk. The Initiative was founded by the Humboldt Foundation in conjunction with the German Foreign Office. It is financed by the Foreign Office, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung, the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Stiftung Mercator.
