German government to extend funding for Tübingen’s Center of Islamic Theology

Confirms committment to national standards for religious education

The German government has announded it will extend Center of Islamic Theology funding for a further five years. The decision follows a positive review of the Center, which opened its doors to students at the University of Tübingen October 2011 - the first institute of its kind. The Center aims to conduct high-level research comparable to that of Tübingen’s Faculties of Protestant and Catholic Theology, and to train teachers of Religious Instruction for some 700,000 Muslim schoolchildren in Germany.

Germany’s federal government has supported the Center of Islamic Theology with funding of some €4m over the past five years. The Center currently has four professors, with three more to come this year. More than 200 young men and women are currently studying at the Center. The state of Baden-Württemberg passed a decision last year for a purpose-built new home for the rapidly-growing Center. The new building is to be located close to Tübingen’s historical Theologicum.
