In the first funding phase, and under the title ‘Narrative (Self-)Reflection in the Sagas of Icelanders’, this project dealt with a rather homogeneous group of narrative elements and the analysis of smaller narrative units such as scenes or episodes and demonstrated that the narrative voice in the sagas uses a limited repertoire of commentaries to reflect the aesthetic quality of the text.
In the second funding phase, more diverse and larger elements will now be analysed, such as plot units, narrative strands, and character types. These figures of aesthetic reflection have been analysed in the past, both positively and negatively, in the context of late medieval Icelandic prose literature and described as a kaleidoscope whose constant movement endlessly produces new configurations. It is our hypothesis that such a kaleidoscopic approach can not only be applied to the – supposedly inferior and less sophisticated – late medieval saga literature, but that it is a narrative strategy typical of the entire corpus of Icelandic sagas. The project’s central concerns, which are rooted in current discussions in the field of Old Norse-Icelandic studies, thus relate to the analysis of this kaleidoscopic approach, asking: 1. What are the consequences for questions of canon formation if sagas of different genres use the same narrative strategy, which was considered inferior by older research? 2. What are the consequences for the assessment of sagas as historical sources or as fictional literature if their aesthetic quality is scrutinised more closely?
The corpus for this study consists of the Sagas of Icelanders (Íslendingasögur), which are contrasted with the Sturlunga saga compilation as a comparative corpus. In addition, the connections and interactions between Íslendingasögur and legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur) will be re-examined, as both contribute elements to the larger kaleidoscope.

Project B5 explores a common feature of the Icelandic family sagas: narratorial comments that point to a reflection of intratextuality, intertextuality and referentiality. Although they are (at a first glance) not very exciting, these comments give insight into the kind of aesthetic reflections as well as social conditions and connexions of narrating in the vernacular. These heretofore under-researched comments will be systematically collected, contextualised and analysed with regard to narrative (self-)reflection in the Icelandic family sagas; they thus form a central contribution to the reconstruction of an early modern aesthetics.
