Research involving animals at the University of Tübingen

Scientists at the University of Tübingen conduct research for the benefit of people, the environment, and society. They find groundbreaking answers to the questions of our time, work toward a sustainable future, and develop new treatments for diseases, all based on transparent and reproducible scientific methods. Animal testing is an established part of these methods and plays a crucial role in scientific progress across many fields of research.

Many people view the use of laboratory animals with skepticism or reject it entirely. Many researchers at the University of Tübingen choose to work with laboratory animals on a daily basis. They do not do so lightly, but rather in accordance with the relevant laws, following rigorous review by the authorities, and on solid ethical foundations.

Our work on alternatives to animal testing

Animal testing is caught between two conflicting moral objectives: the protection of life and the environment, and the improvement of living conditions on the one hand; and respect for all life, including that of animals, on the other. There are valid arguments on both sides. Each side can be legitimately defended, and each side is open to debate, though this debate must be conducted through reasoned argument, dialogue, and democratic processes. Mindful of this, the University of Tübingen communicates transparently and with a full awareness of the issues surrounding animal experimentation.

Our commitment to transparency in animal testing

The University of Tübingen is a signatory of the Initiative Transparente Tierversuche (initiative for transparency in animal testing), set up by Tierversuche verstehen (understanding animal testing). With this, University declares its support for their goal of providing clear information, fostering communication, and enabling an objective dialogue on animal testing.
