Abstract:

"Ambiguity in Ciceros’s Philosophica: Arcesilaus’ two faces in the philosophical reception" (working title)

Arcesilaus, head of Plato’s Academy in the 3rd c. BCE, is usually seen as a sceptic. However, in Cicero’s philosophical texts certain cases can be identified in which Arcesilaus also appears as a dogmatic Platonist. The project aims at (1) revealing the philosophical premises that make these two mutually exclusive reconstructions of Arcesilaus’ method possible and (2) analysing Cicero’s ambiguous depiction of the New Academy, i.e. the Platonic Academy since the so called sceptic turn.
